Worldcoin addresses Orb’s privacy concerns with an in-depth audit.

Worldcoin has published the results of an independent audit conducted by Trail of Bits, focusing on Orb ‘s iris-scanning technology .

According to a recent Tools for Humanity(TFH) report, the Worldcoin Foundation commissioned Trail of Bits to conduct a detailed audit of the Orb software. This audit went beyond standard security checks and included an assessment of specific aspects of Orb’s privacy and functionality.

The audit examined Worldcoin’s Orb devices, focusing on how they handle and secure user data. Findings showed that the devices do not store personal data except for iris codes, which are encrypted and transmitted for verification purposes.

Worldcoin Orb privacy audit

TFH presented several technical caveats to help the audit, focusing on the Orb software as of July 8, 2023. During the default opt-out registration process, Orb collects only the user’s iris code and does not transmit any other personally identifiable information .

The goal is to ensure that no personally identifiable information is transmitted or stored in Orb’s permanent memory, other than the iris code. In the event that the user registers more data, all data stored on the device’s SSD will be asymmetrically encrypted, meaning that the device cannot decrypt it. In addition, the study confirmed that Orb does not retrieve sensitive data from the user’s device.

It confirmed that the iris code is not stored on Orb at all times; it is sent to the backend in a single request and only to servers that have been pre-approved and are protected by end-to-end encryption.

Lessons learned by Trail of Bits

According to Trail of Bits, the analysis “did not uncover vulnerabilities in Orb’s code that can be directly exploited with respect to the described project objectives.”

“Although Trail of Bits’ review identified some anecdotal concerns that could theoretically affect the project’s objectives, the affected code has therefore been updated,” the report reads. “The audit did not identify any instances where the project’s objectives were directly compromised.”
