Vitalik Buterin says Worldcoin is doing well, serious about privacy criticism

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently commented on Worldcoin ‘s efforts to ensure the privacy of user data, acknowledging their progress.

Responding to a user’s social media post about the project, co-founded by OpenAI’s Sam Altman, he noted that Worldcoin has done a “pretty good job” when it comes to protecting personal data through cryptography.

“IMO [in my opinion] they have actually done a pretty good job of taking privacy criticism seriously and designing their system to use less and less data,” Buterin said.

Buterin’s concerns and skepticism

In October 2023. Vitalik Buterin expressed concerns about Worldcoin, especially its basic mechanism that verifies a person’s identity by scanning the iris of the eye. He discussed the “digital passport” that differentiates humans from artificial intelligence, but also raised issues of privacy and accessibility.

Buterin noted that the system could help solve “problems related to spam and concentration of power,” but warned: “If the ID card is not solved, decentralized governance will become much easier for very wealthy players, including hostile governments, to take over .

His main concern was the massive data that was collected during the iris scan, which could potentially reveal personal information such as gender, ethnicity and health status.

Buterin was skeptical about the possibility of Worldcoin’s global availability, saying: “Even with distributed production on a much larger scale, it would be difficult to reach a world with Orb within five kilometers of everyone.”

Government law regulating Worldcoin

Worldcoin ‘s biometric data collection practices have recently been met with regulatory action around the world.

In Portugal, the National Data Protection Commission (CNPD) on March 26 temporarily halted Worldcoin’s operations for 90 days due to concerns about the collection of iris and facial scans without proper consent, especially from minors.

Similarly, in Spain, the Data Protection Agency (AEPD) issued a three-month ban on Worldcoin’s data collection starting March 6, citing similar issues. Worldcoin’s legal appeals were rejected by a local court, affirming the AEPD’s decision.

The cases reflect the increasing scrutiny of Worldcoin by regulators in various jurisdictions, including Hong Kong and Kenya, where concerns about privacy risks and biometric data collection have led to investigations and restrictions on the platform’s operations.
