Recently disclosed court documents reveal Sam Bankman-Fried‘s plans to improve public opinion after the FTX collapse in 2022. Google presented 19 ideas for changing the narrative about the cryptocurrency exchange’s collapse on social media platforms among the documents filed by US prosecutors.
Appearing on Tucker Carlson ‘s show, allying with the Republican Party, criticizing lawyers and leaking documents to the press are just some of Bankman-Fried’s ideas. In addition, he proposed spreading a message opposing Binance.
The prosecution is asking for 50 years in prison
The documents are part of the government’s argument for imposing a 40-50 year prison term on the former FTX CEO, who was convicted in November 2023 on charges of fraud and money laundering.
Prosecutors say the Google document indicates that Bankman-Fried is highly likely to commit more fraud if he is released from prison in a shorter period of time. Under U.S. sentencing guidelines, the recommended sentence is well below the maximum possible sentence, which is 110 years in prison.
On the other hand, according to a letter filed in February, Bankman-Fried’s defense attorney is asking for a sentence of no more than seven years. The judge is expected to announce his decision on March 28.
The government argues that Bankman-Fried’s sentencing request is an attempt to downplay his crimes as mere mistakes or misunderstandings, citing letters filed by his defense to reduce his sentence.
Nearly a year after the FTX collapse, Bankman-Fried was found guilty on all seven charges brought against him by the US government in a jury trial.
