Democratic favorite in the US presidential election, Kamala Harris, has her eye on Michigan Senator Gary Peters as her vice presidential candidate this year.
Axios reported Tuesday that labor unions are mainly pushing for Peters’ candidacy to be considered. They believe the addition of the Michigan senator could strategically bolster Harris’ candidacy in the key battleground state.
An official with the Michigan Democratic Party told the portal that Peters is interested in the nomination and is actively seeking endorsements.
Gary Peters known as a vociferous critic of cryptocurrencies
Senator Peters has a history of opposing cryptocurrencies. He co-sponsored legislation to combat money laundering through digital assets. However, he has also supported rolling back legislation that would affect banks holding cryptocurrencies. Critics of anti-money laundering legislation say it could stifle innovation and drive cryptocurrency activity underground.
Peters has previously raised concerns about the role of cryptocurrencies in cybercrime and ransomware attacks. He has also investigated how they facilitate cybercrime.
“My investigation will help us better understand how cryptocurrencies can embolden cybercriminals and identify possible policy changes that would help disrupt the incentive that cryptocurrencies provide for criminal organizations and foreign adversaries to attack key public and private sector systems,” – he said.
Cryptocurrency industry waits for Kamala Harris’ clear position
Kamala Harris has not spoken much about her position on cryptocurrencies. However, billionaire Mark Cuban has suggested that she may be “much more open” about cryptocurrencies in this election. “Changing the policy changes the message and lets everyone know that she is responsible and open, literally, to business,” – Cuban said.
The cryptocurrency industry is still waiting for Harris’ final position. As vice president under Joe Biden, he is part of an administration known for its reluctance to pass legislation in Congress. In addition, enforcement actions against cryptocurrency companies by the Securities and Exchange Commission have intensified under Chairman Gary Gensler at this time.
A short list of Harris vice presidents has been revealed
Vice presidential candidates often help balance the list of presidential candidates to attract a wider group of voters. Reuters reported on Monday that Harris is currently considering mostly white male candidates.
She reportedly put her campaign on hold this weekend to hold private talks with several potential candidates, including Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Other candidates being considered include Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, US Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
