In a recent Polymarket poll , bookmakers predict that President-elect Donald Trump, who is expected to be inaugurated in January 2025, is more likely to pardon the January 6 U.S. Capitol rioters than Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht.
In a Polymarket poll titled “Who will Trump pardon?” Ulbricht reportedly has an 83% chance of receiving a pardon, while the Capitol Hill insurgents – who stormed the US Capitol in January 2021 to disrupt Joe Biden ‘s inauguration – have an 89% chance.
Trump previously promised to release the controversial darknet founder after Ulbricht was sentenced to life in prison for running Silk Road, an anonymous e-commerce platform known for illegal drug trafficking.
Since his conviction, Ulbricht has expressed remorse, and his case has garnered significant support from members of the cryptocurrency community.
Following the January 6 riots, in which six people were killed and 174 rescuers were injured, Trump became the first US president to be impeached twice, once for inciting an uprising.
According to a January 2024 press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the District of Columbia, an estimated 1,265 people have been charged in connection with the attack.
The probe lists other known convicts, including FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, Breitbart director Steve Bannon, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and Trump himself.
Donald Trump promises cryptocurrency-friendly legislation
The Republican candidate, who recently launched his family’s cryptocurrency platform World Liberty Financial in September , has loudly endorsed digital assets while campaigning ahead of the 2024 US presidential election.
Trump has since promised to introduce a cryptocurrency-friendly regulatory framework across the United States and to fire controversial Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Gary Gensler upon his return to the Oval Office.
“We will have regulations,” Trump said at the Bitcoin 2024 conference, adding, “but from now on, the rules will be written by people who love your industry, not hate it.” Defeated Democratic candidate Kamala Harris tried to win over crypto voters in the weeks leading up to the election, albeit unsuccessfully. Donald Trump’s inauguration is scheduled for January 20, 2025.
